Obuasi, Ghana — November 2024 — DiDi GREENS, a Ghana-based NGO restoring degraded and illegally mined lands in Obuasi, partnered with the Obuasi Cricket Academy (OCA) and DiDi Foods to deliver a two-part community program: the “Plant a Tree for Your Future” Junior Cricket Tournament and a “Break Cancer” Awareness Day focused on prevention and early detection.
Each year, DiDi GREEN recognizes outstanding volunteers who planted and cared for the most trees across Obuasi’s Ghana Cocoa Belt. Winners are named “Greener of the Year.” Awardees receive incentives (tools, stipends, certificates) and, if the winner is a student, scholarships to support their education. The goal is simple: celebrate community leadership, inspire friendly competition, and keep trees alive—not just planted.

We nurse and gift grafted avocado trees to our Greener Members, who plant them on clean, raised berms across Obuasi’s recovering landscapes. The trees act like living anchors—their roots stabilise the soil, their canopies cool the ground, and their leaves rebuild organic matter. Because metals remain mostly in the roots and skins, our annual pulp safety tests keep fruit safe for families and markets. Over time, each tree becomes a steady income source, creating fair work for women and youth in nurseries, harvesting, and sales—while turning once-scarred land into healthy, food-producing farms
